TWO MOONS shining in the sky; yeah not me and you but Moon and Mars at the same time on the Sky

August 24th, 2007 by Fahd

TWO MOONS shining in the sky; yeah not me and you but Moon and Mars at the same time on the Sky. The news was too great and was broken to me by my friend Jami Jee.

According to an e-mail circulating in cyberspace, the red planet Mars will be exceptionally close to the earth on Aug 27 this year and “it will look like the earth has two moons!”

However, astronomers are calling it a hoax. Nehru Planetarium director N Rathnashree calls it “The Great Mars Hoax”.

On Aug 27, there is nothing special connected with Mars, she said.

However, an interesting conjunction that can be seen early in the morning of the 27th – Saturn and Venus appearing very close to each other, low in the eastern skies, she said.

So close to each other, that they might look like a single object. But one will need clear skies low in the eastern horizon to see this event, Dr Rathnashree said.

This hoax e-mail chain started following the Mars close approach of 2003, which was an actual event. On the 27th of August, 2003 Mars was closer to Earth than it had been for several thousands of years before or after.

It appeared bright and quite spectacular in the eastern skies in the evenings and people worldover enjoyed viewing Mars at that time. At its most spectacular, it did not still appear as big or as bright as the Moon – it could never do that without a drastic change in the orbits of Mars and Earth,” she explained.

The “as big as the Full Moon” rumour would have started from a statement by Astronomers, explaining the Mars opposition that happens about once every two years, when the position of Mars is “analogous” to the position of the Full Moon, she said.

That is, when we see a Full Moon, the Earth is in the middle, with the Moon on one side and the Sun on the other. Similarly, when Mars is at opposition, Earth is in the middle, Mars is on one side and Sun on the other, she said.

According to the Sydney Observatory, “the email is a hoax describing in a somewhat exaggerated fashion the events of 2003. On August 27, 2003 Mars was only 55.8 million km away which is almost the closest possible distance it can be from Earth.”

To the unaided eye, it looked like a shining red beacon while through a telescope a small red disc could be seen with some dark features visible. In late August this year, Mars is faint and just visible after sunset low in the western sky,” Nick Lomb, Curator of Astronomy at the observatory explained on its website.

Dr Rathnashree said several people by now, must have received the circulating hoax e-mail that claims that Mars will be closer to Earth on the August 27 this year than ever before, that it will not be this close again for thousands of years and also some sensational claim about it appearing as bright or large as the Moon.

Some news and electronic media have actually reported this as an event to come, before astronomers were contacted to clarify. Many people now are eagerly waiting to see this wonderful phenomenon on August 27th and are calling up planetaria in their neighbourhood to ask if they are making arrangements to observe this event, she said.

I am not sure whether I am gonna watch these two moons in the sky together. In urdu a poet says “Tu Kisi Roz Utar Ghar Meray Sham ke baad”, (Oh moon! land in my place someday after the evening ). So in the same way, I would say these Indian Lyrics,”Ae chand khoobsoorat, ae asman ke taro tum meray sang zameen par thori see raat Guzaro”. So ab chand akela naheen, Mars hain naa. as Shah Rukh wanted to call chand on as both were alone. But chanda mamoon you are no more alone Mareekh (Mars) is going to be with you in only 3 days.

Here is what David Emery from About.com says

According to the latest version of an email rumor circulating since 2003, August 27 will bring the closest ‘encounter’ between Mars and Earth in recorded history, and it will look as if there are two moons in the night sky

    Description: Email rumor / Hoax
    Circulating since: 2006
    Status: False

Email example contributed by Susan T., 25 July 2007:

    See whats true,
    FW: Two moons

    MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THIS

    ** Two moon on 27 August ***

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for………….

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky Starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked Eye. This will happen On Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch The sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The Next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY Will ever see it again.

Comments: The text of this rumor was roughly accurate when a version of it first began circulating in the summer of 2003, outdated when it went around again in 2005, and just plain false when it appeared for the third time in 2006. It is now 2007, and making the email rounds again. How many times can a “once in a lifetime” event occur?

The oscillating orbits of Mars and Earth did, in fact, bring the two planets closer together on August 27, 2003 than at any other time during the past 50,000 years. Though Mars never actually appeared “as large as the full moon” — not even close — it was indeed, for a few days in 2003, among the brightest objects in the night sky.

In October 2005 another well-publicized “close encounter” occurred, though in that case the planets were about 13 million kilometers further apart than during the 2003 event.

Nothing so spectacular is predicted for 2007.
