Artist Gulgi/ Gulgee and his wife murdered

December 19th, 2007 by Fahd

So sad; my friend Naseer Mughal just got a mobile SMS news flash message announcing a bad news. “Artist Gulgee and his wife Murdered”. I couldn’t beleive the news but it was one of the Pak Government cellular companies Ufone and I had to beleieve it. I just did a quick type in my Firefox’s address bar, yeah the famous ( yet notorious to our so-called liberal and democratic Islamic Republic of Pakistan ) Geo News adress www.geo.tv and yeah this news was the latest one in their sidebar. The details are as follows. These details are taken from the Geo TV and I take no responsibility for any misinformation.

Artist Gulgee, his wife murdered
KARACHI: Renowned artist Ismail Gulgee, his wife Zarine along with their maid were found dead here at their residence on Wednesday. The initial investigations reveal that they were killed about two to three days ago.Ismail Gulgee was an award-winning, world famous Pakistani artist who was born in Peshawar on October 25, 1926. A qualified engineer from the U.S, he was a self-taught abstract and portrait painter. From about 1960, Guljee was noted as an abstract painter influenced by the tradition of Islamic calligraphy and by the American “action painting”.

The first exhibition of his art-work was held in 1950.

The legendary Ismail Gulgee was entirely self-taught, and was renowned as a portrait painter in his early career. One of his most famous early works was the portrait of Afghanistan’s Shah Zahir Shah painted in 1957.

He also had the honour of making portraits of Prince Karim Agha Khan, former princess of Iran, Deeba and former president of Pakistan, Ayub Khan.

Transcending simple canvas and paint formulae, Gulgee was known for using mixed materials in his art and was a sculptor of exceptional skill, a legacy that lives on in his son Amin Gulgee.

Pakistani artist Gulgee murdered in his home
KARACHI – Ismail Gulgee, Pakistan’s most prominent artist, was found murdered on Wednesday along with his wife and a maid in their Karachi home, police said. He was 81.

They said the three were found gagged in different rooms of the house, which is in the city’s most upmarket district. The hands of his wife, Zarina, were tied.

“All three were suffocated. This happened around three days ago,” said senior Karachi police officer Asif Ejaz Sheikh.

He said Gulgee’s body was found in the bedroom, his wife’s body in the kitchen and the maid in the main hall. The bodies were found by police after a neighbour complained of a bad smell.

Gulgee trained as an engineer in the United States before turning to painting works of modern art. He won various awards.

After starting out as a portrait painter, he turned to more abstract painting and became interested in Islamic calligraphy.

He produced numerous works using the different names of Allah, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York said on its Web site (www.metmuseum.org).

“In these textural works, Gulgee brings the Islamic calligraphy tradition to the modern practice of action painting such as that developed by the American artist Jackson Pollock,” the museum said.

President Pervez Musharraf said on his Web site Gulgee was his “all-time favourite” artist. Musharraf condemned the killings, state television reported.

Gulgee was born in Peshawar in 1926. His son, Amin Gulgee, is a well-known sculptor.
